School can be tough sometimes and studying for certain subjects certainly can drag if you struggle with this area but there are some useful ways that can help you study better and make your school life go a bit easier just by getting into the habit of certain things.
Here we look at several hacks that you won't be taught in school but may help when trying to learn.
1. Improve The Quality of Your Notes
Making notes is vital to the revision of knowledge and studying for exams but sometimes you can forget this when in class or making them so you just jot down a few points in scruffy handwriting so as to get them out of the way. The tip here is to imagine you are making some notes for someone else. Once you get into this habit you'll put more care and thought into them.
Your quality of notes will go up and it will be easier to read, easier to study and easier to take on the information as well as having more detail to them.
2. Times New Roman is \The Fastest Font To Read
Times New Roman was a font designed for its ease on the eye and studies have shown that people read this font faster than others. As such, if making notes on a computer it may be best to write them in Times New Roman so as to make the information quicker to absorb and easier to digest.
That being said, people may also read faster in fonts they are more accustomed to so find what works for you.
3. Color Code Your Notes and Text Books
Your brain has a better time processing things if it can associate them with other things and so by color coding your notes, the brain then associates the certain areas of information with those colors thus making the information easier to process for it. When studying, make sure not to get your colors mixed up and it will be easier to recall the information.
If you also color code your books or highlight the tops of them, it will be easier to find them in your bag and locker rather than desperately trying to find the right one when class begins.
4. Give Yourself Rewards and Motivation To Study
If you give yourself a reward for study or for reaching a certain point in your study it won't become such a chore and your brain will also associate the information it has just processed with the reward thus making you feel better about studying and also helping you to remember and recall information more easily.
By having the incentive to study you are more likely to achieve your goals.
5. Spray An Unfamiliar Scent
Whilst your studying, spray a scent that is unfamiliar to you, this will help your brain stay alerted as it tries to process this new smell and make it more receptive to new information. If you then spray this smell again just before you enter an exam or test situation, it will help with your recall as the smell will then be familiar to the brain.
Your brain will then associate it with your study period and have a better time recalling the facts you memorized.
6. Study At The Right Time
Choosing an appropriate study time is vital to absorbing information and getting the most out of your revision. Your body doesn't function as well as when you are tired or hungry and this includes your brain so adapt your study period around your routine and not others.
Work out when you are most productive and work with that. Make a routine and stick to it.
7. Stay Fuelled Up
As we previously touched upon, your body doesn't function as well as it should do when it is hungry so it is important to stay fuelled up, but even if you've had a meal, it's still a good idea to keep candy and treats nearby. Not only does this incentivize study but it also helps with association memory which means you will associate said piece of information with the taste, touch and smell of sweets.
So if you take the candy into the exam or think of the sweets whilst you're there, it could help with your memory on certain subjects.
8. Take Breaks
Keeping of sound body and mind is vital during stressful periods and locking yourself away and doing nothing but study could actually be detrimental to learning. Make sure you take decent breaks, but obviously not too many, This is backed up by major companies such as Google having break rooms and activities set aside for their employees because a happy worker is a good worker and the same applies to self-study.
Just completely take your mind off study for a brief period and this will help the brain relax and recover before throwing it back into the fray. Just make sure a break doesn't turn into not studying at all.
9. Keep A Warm Beverage Nearby
Having a warm drink nearby could offer more than just a comforting drink whilst your cramming. Studies suggest that taking time to slow down, sipping a beverage, for example, allows for time for the brain to process information rather than just constantly bombarding it.
Give it the necessary time to take things onboard and it will function much better in recalling facts.
10. Load Up Some Cracking Tunes!
A quality playlist can be really great for studying. if you have a load of calm, relaxing tunes on in the background it helps keep the mind in a peaceful state whilst you are working away and it can help with associative memory.
Don't go overboard though and load up on heavy, hardcore metal or raving dance tunes. Slower rap beats can be ideal as well as chill out tracks.
11. Avoid Studying In The Same Place Every Day
To have a designated study area is probably a good idea as it will have everything you need to settle down and do some work but it shouldn't be used every day. If you can get out and about, switch it up a little and head to your local library or (quiet) coffee shop. Changing your environment whilst learning helps you retain knowledge.
This is because it helps the brain stay alert and stops it settling into familiar patterns.
12. Use Post-It Notes To Cover Things You're Having Difficulty With
By separating the information you are struggling to take on board, you give it a special prominence that allows to the brain to designate it as something different from the other information and so you can focus on that more readily. It also prevents you having to flip through stuff you already know and therefore cover the same ground again.
Make sure to color code these notes for the different areas of study, though. This is also a great way of remembering quotes.
13. Chewing Gum Helps Improve Concentration
It has been found in different studies that chewing gum can aid concentration as it engages the brain in a task it is familiar with allowing for it to associate the knowledge with this task and so it becomes familiarized with the information also.
It does not help with memory but by engaging the brain in something very basic, the mind is less likely to wander.
14. Draw Out Diagrams
When trying to memorize diagrams or pictures, draw them out yourself and they will become stuck in the mind with the physical actuality of drawing them out by hand. This allows the brain to associate the memory of doing something with the information and thus making it easier to recall.
