18 of The Most Expensive Dishes In The World

Ever been out for a meal and felt a little stung when the bill has arrived? Sometimes the food is a little pricier than you were expecting and you have to begrudgingly cough up and this happens more often than not in swankier places where you weren't expecting a cheap meal in the first place. Well, if you want to avoid total embarrassment in the future, you may want to try and avoid taking a date to any of the places we've listed here.


Unless you've got seriously expensive tastes and the bank balance to match it, it seems a trifle unlikely you'll be chowing down on any of these eats but just in case you've got some money to burn, here are some of the most expensive meals in the world.

18. Dragon Dog by DougieDog: Vancouver, Canada- $100

Whilst hot dogs are pretty darn great, we all know they are mostly the more questionable parts of the animal ground down and shaped into a sausage and then put in a roll and that's why they are often very cheap but Dougie Luv of DougieDog decided to go the other way and try to create the world's most expensive hot dog.

A foot-long bratwurst is infused with hundred-year-old Louis XIII cognac and topped with fresh lobster, Picante sauce, and Kobe beef seared in olive and truffle oil before being tossed in a bun and served up. However, you may have to order up to 12 hours in advance so that the ingredients can be sourced but Dougie does claim around three are usually kept on reserve at most times. With around 783 of these dogs sold some people clearly have thought it worth splashing out on.

17. Cheesesteak by Barclay Prime: Philadelphia, USA - $100

Dressing up the classic Philadelphia cheesesteak, Barclay Prime use wage rib eye cut down with foie gras and topped with truffled homemade fontina cheese on a sesame roll to really make it something special in the city that invented the dish. It also comes with a glass of Dom Perignon champagne and is surprisingly popular.

Often ordered by people in groups, there is no need to order this in advance as the kitchen has what they need.

16. Buddha Jumps Over The Wall Soup by Kai Mayfair: London, UK - $170

The world's most expensive soup, this dish used to contain the highly prized shark fin so often lauded in Asian cuisine but the sale of this is no prohibited in the UK and replaced with noodles to go along with the abalone, Japanese flower mushroom, sea cucumber, dried scallops, chicken, huan ham, pork, and ginseng.

The kitchen has to have five days notice before ordering and it and it comes in at around $170 (depending on the strength of the £ at the time of buying as it costs £108.)

15. Masa Toro with Caviar by Bar Masa: New York City, USA - $240

Sushi can really range in price depending on quality, ingredients and how far away from the sea you are but Bar Masa in New York and Vegas sell tiny bites of Masa Toro with Caviar for an eye-watering $240 which is 8 rolls of fatty, tuna, caviar, rice and avocado wrapped up in bite-sized chunks and served with a crisp, buttery brioche on the side.

Bar Masa is not the cheapest of places, to begin with, but this will really add to your bill!

14. Wagyu Beef Steak by The Old Homestead Steakhouse: New York City, USA - $350

Wagyu beef is imported from Japan and sees the cows it comes from preened and pampered, regularly massaged so as not to become tense and make the meat stringy and they are fed barley and given beer to drink (as well as being bathed in it) to make sure they remain fatty and tender. The conditions the cows are kept in and the import cost means that the cost is really bumped up.

Coming in a 12-ounce portion, up to 25 steaks are sold a night and there is no need to reserve but it is recommended as they often sell out as quickly as they come in.

13. Decadence D'Or Cupcake by Sweet Surrender: Las Vegas, USA - $750

Given that the whole point of a cupcake is that it is a small, handheld cake you can devour in one easy sitting you would be hard pushed to find one that costs too much money. That is, unless, you find yourself at Sweet Surrender in Las Vegas where one created from chocolate made from Venezuela's rare Porcelana Criollo bean, Louis XIII de Remy Martin Cognac topped with Tahitian Gold Vanilla Caviar and edible gold flakes and served in a hand blown sugar Fleur-de-Lis.

Due to the effort needed alone to make it, 48 hours in advance are needed to be given if you wish to try this cake out.

12. Golden Opulence Sundae by Serendipity 3: New York City, USA - $1000

First created in 2004 for the restaurant's 50th anniversary, this sundae sees the ice cream and caviar used in its concoction being flown into the restaurant and so it must be ordered up to 48 hours in advance but that, along with the auspicious cost, haven't stopped over 200 people ordering the dessert.

Three scoops of Tahitian vanilla ice cream infused with Madagascar vanilla beans, topped with 23K edible gold leaf, topped with candied fruits, gold dragets, chocolate truffles and a  bowl of caviar and coming in a Baccarat Harcourt goblet with a 18K gold spoon.

11. Bellissima Pizza by Nino's Bellissima Pizzeria: New York City, USA - $1000

Six different types of caviar totaling $820 by themselves sit on top of a regular pizza pie that is then topped off with lobster tail for good measure. Despite all of this decadence, this isn't even the most expensive pizza in the world (which will get a mention later) but it does still need to be ordered a few days in advance.

Despite New York and Chicago regularly claiming to be the home of pizza, neither can lay claim to the world's most expensive pizza, which isn't even in America (or Italy for that matter.)

10. Zillion Dollar Lobster Frittata by Norma's: New York City, USA - $1000

Despite its name, it does not cost a zillion dollars but rather only a thousand, which is still enough to make it the world's most expensive omelet. A lobster laying on a bed of fried potatoes and then covered in egg and then sprinkled with 10 ounces of caviar, around 10-12 of these are sold by the restaurant each year.

They do have a cheaper $100 of the frittata but that only has one ounce of caviar on it, so is it really worth it?

9. White Truffle and Gold Pizza by Margo's: Malta - $2,420

The world's most expensive pizza is found on the tiny island nation of Malta where a week is needed to create the dish as the truffles used on it are flown in from Piemonte. Due to the fluctuations in the price of white truffles, the pizza is a minimum of $2,420 and could cost more.

Also being topped with organic water buffalo mozzarella and 24K gold leaf, it is only available  during truffle season from October through May and is captioned on the menu with "This is not just a pizza, this is a sign from God telling us how great She is."

8. Fleur Burger by Fleur: Las Vegas, USA - $5000

Kobe beef (also known as Wagyu, which we mentioned earlier) is used in the burger patties which is then topped with seared foie gras and truffles on a brioche truffle bun. This is pricey but for those who order the burger,  a bottle of 1995 Chateau Petrus wine and the two crystal stemware glasses will be delivered to their home by the restaurant.

There is no need to order in advance but, given its price, only around 26 have been ordered so far.

7. The Trilogy by Gleneagles Hotel: Scotland, UK - $5,102

A cocktail that comes coupled with jewelry, the luxury hotel in Scotland teamed up with their in-house jewelers Mappin & Webb to create a series of cocktails that come accompanied by jewelry which is where most of the cost comes from. The most expensive of these is the Trilogy which is Stolichnaya Elite vodka with a twist of lemon and a 18K white gold ring as a garnish with a baguette and pave diamonds. 

The marginally cheaper Romance involves No3 gin, maraschino liqueur, Parfait Amour and lemon juice to go with its white gold diamond-encrusted pendant from Florence and comes in around $4,317.

6. Salvatore's Legacy by Salvatore at Playboy: London, UK - $8,633

Using ingredients that effectively make it the world's oldest cocktail alongside one of the most expensive, it comprises of 1788 Clos de Griffier Vieux Cognac, 1770 Kummel Liqueur, 1860 Dubb Orange Curacao and early 20th century Angostura Bitters and was created by Salvatore Calabrese.

It can only be ordered with the approval of Salvatore with only three having been purchased since its inception.

5. Diamond Studded Martini by Algonquin Hotel: New York City, USA - $10,000

Just a straight up martini, this cocktail is so expensive because the hotel works with its in-house jewelers to procure a customizable diamond ring (or just the lone diamond should you wish) which will be served in the drink at the hotel's Blue Bar. The drink itself isn't that costly (although it does use the very best of Grey Goose vodka) with the ring being what pushes it so high on this list.

Still, if you can live without the diamonds, you can save a fair few grand by just ordering a regular martini.

4. Ono by XS Nightclub: Las Vegas, USA - $10,000

Another $10,000 drink that features some serious jewelry, the beverage itself consists of Charles Heidsieck Champagne Charlie 1981 and Louis XIII de Remy Martin Black Pearl cognac but comes with a pair of men's silver cufflinks and a woman's 18K white-gold chain with a black pearl pendant.

The drink is by no means cheap but, again, most of the price here comes from the jewelry.

3. Fortress Stilt Fisherman Indulgence Dessert by The Fortress Resort & Spa: Sri Lanka - $14,500

A decadent dessert that is made with gold leaf Italian cassata, flavored with fruit-infused Irish cream over the top of a fruit compote, a Dom Perignon champagne sabayon at the base and a handmade chocolate carving in the shape of a local stilt fisherman. The real kicker, though, is the 80 karat Aquamarine gemstone that tops it off.

Orders have to be made a day in advance and can be ordered at the resort's DUO restaurant.

2. Chocolate Pudding by Lindeth Howe Country House Hotel: Lake District, UK - $350, 000

Although a chocolate pudding doesn't sound as though it should be so pricey, this dessert is made with high-end chocolate, gold leaf, champagne and caviar and is then layered with champagne jelly and laced with edible gold as well as including a diamond with it. The prep that goes into it requires it to be ordered two weeks in advance to dining.

Only one has ever been ordered but it remains available if you're feeling like getting rid of some money.

1. Strawberries Arnaud by Arnaud's: New Orleans, USA - $3.95 Million

Partnering with MS Rau antiques, Arnaud's came up with a package designed for proposals where you order there signature dish of strawberries served in a marinade of port, red wine, spices and citrus with vanilla ice cream which would then come 4.71 karat diamond ring. The original ring is no longer available (presumably due to being sold) but you can now get it with a 7.09 karat pink diamond.

Despite this, it remains Arnaud's worst selling dessert, we can't think why.
